What It’s Actually Like to Work With a Colorado Wedding Photographer

From Start to Finish

Planning a wedding in Colorado comes with a lot of moving pieces — from mountain weather to timelines built around sunset. My name is Natalie, I’m a Colorado wedding photographer with over 7 years experience in photographing elopements and wedding all over the US and Colorado.

And if you’ve never worked with a photographer before, you’re probably wondering: “What is it actually like to work with a wedding photographer and specifically a photographer in Colorado?” This guide walks you through the entire process — from your first inquiry to your final gallery — so you know exactly what to expect and can feel confident every step of the way.

Inquiring With a Colorado Wedding Photographer

This is where everything begins.

Most couples reach out through a contact form after searching for a Colorado wedding photographer or finding someone whose work they connect with on social media.

After you inquire, you can expect:

  • A response with availability

  • Pricing or starting collections

  • Information about next steps

This is also where your photographer starts learning about:

  • Your wedding location (mountain, city, destination)

  • Your vision and priorities

  • What matters most to you

This step is all about making sure you’re aligned before moving forward with a meeting

Consultation Call – Finding the Right Fit

Most photographers will offer a consultation call (phone or video), especially for weddings in Colorado where logistics can be more complex. Wild weather and golden hour can definitely play into that!

This is your chance to:

  • Ask questions about the process

  • Talk through your wedding plans

  • Get a feel for personality and communication style

Why this matters:
You’ll spend a large portion of your wedding day with your photographer — especially during portraits, getting ready, and timeline transitions. Feeling comfortable with them is just as important as loving their work. Your experience will tie directly into how much you love your photos at the end of the day.

Booking Your Wedding Photographer in Colorado

Once you’re ready, booking is simple.

Typically, this includes:

  • A signed contract

  • A retainer to reserve your date - Retainer fees vary by photographer. Most retainer fees are a percentage (20%-50% is common), but can also be a flat rate.

From that point on, your photographer is officially part of your wedding team!

Planning Your Colorado Wedding Timeline + Logistics

This is one of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced Colorado wedding photographer.

They’ll help you plan around:

  • Mountain weather patterns

  • Travel time between locations

  • Elevation and lighting conditions

  • Seasonal sunset times

Expect support with:

  • Building a custom timeline

  • Choosing the best ceremony time for lighting

  • Planning portraits around golden hour

In Colorado, timeline planning is everything — and directly impacts how your photos look and how your day feels.

Engagement Session in Colorado (Optional)

Many couples choose to do an engagement session before the wedding.

This is especially helpful if:

  • You’ve never been professionally photographed

  • You want photos in a different Colorado location (mountains, desert, etc.)

It allows you to:

  • Get comfortable in front of your photographer’s camera

  • Learn how your photographer guides you

  • Build trust before your wedding day

Final Wedding Prep + Photo Planning

As your wedding approaches, your photographer will help finalize details like:

  • Timeline adjustments

  • Family photo lists

  • Location logistics

  • Backup plans (especially important for Colorado weather)

This ensures your day runs smoothly and nothing is overlooked.

Your Wedding Day Experience

On your wedding day, your photographer does much more than take photos.

They help create an experience that feels:

  • Relaxed

  • Natural

  • Organized without being rigid

Throughout the day, they will:

  • Guide you into the best lighting

  • Keep things on schedule when needed

  • Capture real, candid moments as they unfold

The goal is for you to stay present — not feel like you're constantly posing.

After the Wedding – Editing + Sneak Peeks

After your wedding, you’ll typically receive:

  • A small set of sneak peek images shortly after the day

    • I deliver a sneak peek of 20-70 photos within 3 days of your wedding or elopement!

  • Your full gallery after the editing process is complete

    • Most photographers deliver galleries in 4-16 weeks. My gallery delivery is 12 weeks, but I generally complete galleries within 6-8 weeks!

Each image is:

  • Carefully selected

  • Professionally edited

  • Matched to a consistent style

Receiving Your Wedding Photo Gallery

Your final gallery is delivered online, where you can:

  • Download high-resolution images

  • Share with friends and family

  • Order prints or albums

This is when you get to fully relive your day — from moments you remember to ones you didn’t even see.

If you're planning a wedding in Colorado and looking for a photographer who helps guide the entire experience — not just show up with a camera — I'd love to connect.
