How to Elope in the San Juan Mountains (Colorado)
The San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado are one of the most breathtaking places in the United States to elope. Many call it the Switzerland of America, and with good reason! Dramatic alpine peaks, wildflower basins, historic mining towns, and rugged jeep roads, the San Juans offer both intimate simplicity and epic scenery.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to planning an unforgettable San Juan elopement.
Choosing Your San Juan’s Elopement Location
How do you pick the best spot?
The San Juans cover a large region in southwestern Colorado, so choosing the right area is the first step.
Popular elopement spots:
Telluride – Dramatic box canyon views and luxury options
Ouray – Often called the “Switzerland of America”
Ridgway – Access to alpine lakes and Mount Sneffels wilderness
Silverton – Remote, rugged, historic mining town
Lake City – Quiet, wild, and less crowded

What season should I elope in the San Juans?
Picking the Best Season for your dream elopement
Each season in the San Juans creates a completely different experience.
Summer (Mid June–August):
Wildflowers are abundant in July, especially throughout the alpine basins and nearby lakes. In June you can expect to see snow covered peaks amidst the lush landscape coming to bloom. This is by far the best season to hike in the San Juans for your elopement. Afternoon thunderstorms are so common, that they are expected this time of year.
Fall (September–early October):
Colorado’s color comes alive in September and early October with golden aspens, cooler temperatures and very few crowds except in popular tourist locations. This is an extremely popular time for elopements, due to accessibility and limited crowding.
Winter (December–April):
If you do elope this time of year most OHV roads are closed for the season with deep snow across the region. Snowshoes or XC skis are a must! Telluride or other accessible locations are definitely the best bet in the winter
Late Spring (May–early June):
Snow will still be present during this time of year, especially at higher elevations. Don’t expect wildflowers doting the landscape. Be prepared with snowshoes if you plan to hike!
Most couples choose late July–September for the easiest access. Shoulder season usually spans from Mid-October to the beginning of December if you wanted ultimate privacy in the San Juans with accessibility.

You can self-solemnize (marry yourselves): That means you can literally exchange vows on a mountain and sign your own marriage license.

Jeep elopement
Jeep elopements on OHV roads are extremely popular in the San Juans. Many of the 4WD roads are extreme, even by Colorado standards so be prepared for a little fear factor on the drive if you aren’t used to mountain roads. Booking a guide may be in your best interest if you haven’t driven the mountain roads in the San Juans before.
Luxury elopement
What is a luxury elopement? You could have a boutique lodge or luxury home in Telluride booked to get ready in, a private guide helping you to all of the most beautiful spots, a helicopter tour of the area, and maybe a private chef for dinner.
Micro Wedding
Micro weddings are small scaled back weddings and extremely popular in Colorado, especially in the San Juans. Invite a curated guest list of your closest family and friends, rent an event friendly vacation or VRBO, and all the vendors you would normally invite but with 30 or fewer guests!
Planning Logistics of your San Juan Elopement
Mountain elopements require a little extra planning.
Transportation
Many locations will require a high clearance 4WD vehicle. You can rent Jeeps or similar 4wd vehicles in Ouray and Silverton easily with a little lead time and a reservation.
Weather
Weather in the San Juans changes dangerously fast. Be prepared with proper layers and gear.
Timing
Sunrise often is much better than sunset due to fewer crowds and of course a much smaller chance of a thunderstorm.
Permits
Check in advance to be sure your location does not require a permit. While most National Forest areas do not, your group size or the exact location you are eloping in might require one.
