Best Time of Year for Loveland Pass Sessions

Because Loveland Pass sits at nearly 12,000 feet, the seasons behave a little differently than lower elevations.

Summer (Late June – Early September)

This is the most popular time for elopements and sessions. You can expect the trails to be easily accessible, wildflowers galore, mild temps during the day, thunderstorms late in the afternoon and sometimes early evening, but usually a dramatic sunset with alpenglow across the surrounding peaks.

Fall (Mid-September – Early October)

Fall in the alpine tundra is short but stunning with golden grasses and snow-capped peaks later in the fall. This is a great time to see Colorado’s famous snowliage! It will be much colder early in the morning and later towards sunset, but it is also far less crowded than the summer.

Winter (November – May)

Winter sessions here can be absolutely magical, but conditions can be intense. It’s cold and often quite windy and covered in snow. Be prepared with traction and possibly snowshoes depending on where you want to elope. Route 6 often closes for avalanche risk after a fresh snowfall. Always check road conditions before planning a winter session and have appropriate backup plans in place!

Sunrise vs Sunset: Which Is Better?

Both times of the day are incredible, but if you are eloping I highly recommend sunrise to avoid the crowds at the pass. It’s also much less risky as far as thunderstorms to elope early in the day. If you do want to afford yourself a bit more privacy, you can always elope at Loveland Pass Lake and hike around to the far side of the lake for amazing views without so many people.

Loveland Pass sits at the Continental Divide which does make it a very popular tourist attraction. What is the continental divide? It’s the place where all water east of the divide flows east, and water to the west of the divide flows west.

Do You Need a Permit for Loveland Pass?

For small elopements and portrait sessions, a permit is usually not required as long as you:

  • Keep groups small (under 10 people total including your elopement vendors such as photographer, videographer, and officiant)

  • Stay on established trails and areas

  • Follow Leave No Trace principles - What are the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT) and how do the relate to elopements? Click here to learn more about why following these principles is crucial.

However, if you’re planning a larger elopement setup with arches, chairs, or decorations, you may need to coordinate with the U.S. Forest Service.

Always double-check regulations weeks before your date to be sure there are no updated regulations.

Tips for a stress free loveland pass elopement

Planning ahead will help your day feel relaxed and adventurous rather than stressful.

Prepare for the altitude

At nearly 12,000 feet, the altitude can affect people quickly. Drink water, eat beforehand, and take it slow. I recommend altitude adjustment tablets if you are coming from sea level and going immediately to your elopement within a day. If you can fly in a few days early the best advice is to stay in nearby summit county sitting at over 9,000 feet to help acclimate.

Dress for the weather

Mountain weather changes fast. Expect wind. Always dress for the occasion with warm layers, rain gear, shells in the winter, and most importantly a hat or hood to stay warm between photos. Most heat escapes through your head.

Loveland Pass is famous for its strong winds, so hairstyles, dresses, and veils should be chosen with that in mind.

Marriage License

You can obtain a marriage license from any Colorado County Clerk (e.g., Clear Creek County). There is no waiting period, and self-solemnization (marrying yourselves) is legal.

Is Loveland Pass dog friendly?

Yes, Loveland Pass is dog friendly on all trails as long as your dog is kept on leash!

Nearby Locations to Pair With Your Session

One of the best parts of shooting at Loveland Pass is how close it is to other incredible mountain locations. Consider adding photos at:

  • Officer’s Gulch

  • Dillon Reservoir

  • Georgetown

  • Breckenridge

This allows couples to create a full adventure session with multiple backdrops in one day.

Loveland Pass is perfect for couples who want big mountain views, a sense of adventure, and an intimate experience surrounded by nature. With minimal hiking and dramatic alpine scenery, it’s one of the easiest ways to capture that iconic Colorado mountain look.
