Surprise Proposal at the Flatirons | Chautauqua Park, Boulder CO

James reached out a couple weeks before a trip to Colorado with his girlfriend Alivia. He had a ring, he was ready to propose to her. He wanted a quiet and romantic mountain setting for the ask, but also something convenient to Boulder where the couple was staying on their trip. He really wanted to make it a complete surprise without even the slightest hint! As a Boulder proposal photographer I got to work planning the perfect Flatirons proposal.

We had the whole evening planned out, a romantic dinner at a nearby steakhouse, followed by a walk through the park at sunset. Taking a walk after a big meal is after all the best way to burn off the calories so it was an easy plan for Alivia to go along with. We chose Chautauqua Park located just outside of downtown Boulder, the only problem was that it was Independence Day and extremely busy. So how do you find a private spot in the park? We went off the beaten path a little to the ideal location. I dropped a pin to James once I got to the location which showed him where to stand. I was hiding in plain sight pretending to wait on a bathroom just up the hill from the trail. Once I saw them walk by I tiptoed behind with my camera in hand. James saw me, and dropped down on one knee. I gave them their space during the proposal and stayed about 30 feet away so they could truly be in their moment.

The plan was a success. Besides conveniently having her nails done, hair flawless, and a cute white sundress on Alivia was actually surprised beyond belief. The steakhouse plan worked perfectly to get her to dress up a little more. For the rest of the evening we wandered around the park until the sun was setting behind the mountains to the west.

Chautauqua Park Engagement Session Guide

What is the best time of day for photos at the flatirons?

Lighting is everything in outdoor photography.

Sunrise (Highly Recommended)

Soft golden light hitting the Flatirons creating an alpenglow effect against the mountains, and of course there are fewer crowds, Sunrise is the perfect time engagement sessions, surprise proposals (if your S.O. is an early riser), and elopements.

Sunset (Also Stunning)

With a warm and glowy backdrop you also cannot go wrong with sunset! The colors come alive and your subjects are backlit by the setting sun to the west. If you want that dreamy Colorado mountain sunset photo session, sunset is magical — just expect more visitors. Going off the beaten path away from the central area of the park is usually helpful for eliminating crowds.

What is the best season for photos in Chautauqua?

Spring (April–June)

Early in the spring you get snow dusted peaks in the background, and in May/June you’ll be exposed to all of the most beautiful Colorado wildflowers. Temperatures are cooler, but not freezing making spring a lovely time of year to visit for your Chautauqua engagement session.

Summer (July-September)

The fields take on a golden hue and you can expect warmer evenings. Summer is also peak for tourism in the park so you will have to hike a bit further out to find privacy.

Fall (October-Early November)

Fall is a short season in Colorado, and definitely in Boulder as well. One moment the aspens are golden, the next moment the flakes start flying. You can definitely expect lower crowding in the fall.

Winter (November-March)

Snow covered flatirons are stunning to say the least. The contrast of the red rocks and snow covered surrounding are very dramatic. If you’re looking to escape the crowds this is your best bet!

Do you need a permit for a photography session or elopement at Chautauqua?

The short answer is yes, your photographer is required to get a permit for all sessions and elopements at Chautauqua due to it’s popularity and the city of Boulder wanting to maintain the beauty of the parks for all to enjoy! Permits range in price from $50-$300 a year for photographers. All Boulder OSMP lands require this permit.

I hold that permit and would love to be your photographer for your Boulder photography session!
